Louis Theroux Talks on Peter Crouch Podcast about Meeting Banksy!
Louis Theroux has discussed the time he met Banksy at a football match in the early 2000s, saying he’s “one of the only people” to have met the elusive Bristol-based artist.
Appearing on BBC 5Live’s That Peter Crouch Podcast, Theroux remembered meeting Banksy at a Queens Park Rangers match in 2001.
Upfront somewhere was this lanky new player and someone said that’s one of their new signings, they call him Rodney.
But his name’s Peter Crouch and they say he’s quite tall and he looks a bit UNGAINLY – but he’s very useful.
This is the random part of this, is that one of the people in the box was a young artist and he was a little bit sheepish, wasn’t terribly outgoing. I said ‘Alright’, He said, ‘You alright’.
I said, ‘What do you do?’, he said ‘I’m an artist, street artist.’ and he gave me a little booklet of some of his art, and I looked at it, and it looked quite good and I kind of made awkward chit chat, and I said, ‘What’s your name?’ and he said ‘Banksy’.
Fast forward, like a year and people kept going, ‘Have you heard about this bloke called Banksy? No-one knows who he is’. And I said, ‘Banksy?! Yeh, I know who he is, we went to a QPR game together’. And everyone was like ‘What!’ you’ve met Banksy?.’
I just couldn’t remember anything about the encounter. It’s just the fact of having met Banksy at the random thing. Has stood me in good stead for the last 20 years. I’m one of the only people who’s met Banksy – and we bonded over Peter Crouch.
